reflexology at Escape spa

Reflexology at Escape, Chelsea Club

The Blurb:

The Escape spa is part of the Chelsea Club, a very swanky pampering palace hidden among the towering football stands of Stamford Bridge. Alongside the pool, fitness centre, very nice changing rooms and all-important bar for post workout G&Ts, the spa offers a range of treatments from a papaya purifying peel to a sports massage. I’ve always been fascinated by reflexology so was intrigued to learn more in the comfortable environs of Escape.

The Process:

Reflexology works on the belief that specific areas of the foot correspond to specific areas of the body: the little toe connects to the ear and the heel to the buttocks! I was slightly concerned she might find that my liver was having to work extra hard that morning after a few drinks the night before, but apart from that I had no specific problem areas – I was more interested in the balancing effects of reflexology.

My therapist, Brigitte, is a freelance reflexologist, so it was reassuring to know that I was going to have a specialist working on my feet. She begun with a relaxing foot massage to make sure that my whole body was calm before she started working her way through the important areas in my feet.

The Result:

Like most massage rooms, the lights were low and pan pipes provided the background music. I felt myself drifting off, but bizarrely I suddenly felt wide awake as Brigitte worked on some areas of my feet, and I would relax again when she moved to a different zone as if she could control my sleepiness.

There were certainly areas where I could feel the pressure of the massage forcing out blockages. Two areas in particular were the big toe, which is said to control the pituitary gland, and the arch of the foot which corresponds to the major organs (maybe that was my liver!), but apparently most people need a bit of extra work in these areas. I was glad to hear that she had not discovered any problem areas that I had not been aware of, so I was able to skip out of the spa – past footballers relaxing in the hot tub – on relaxed and balanced feet.
