Less is sometimes more

‘I called a recruiter today saying that I’m flexible – aka desperate’

We discover less is more in the midst of tough times… During an interview last week, the interviewer focused heavily on West London Living. You can often tell what someone’s preconceptions of you are by his/her line of questioning. My responses elicited an, ‘It all sounds very Ab Fab.’ He followed this up with a warning that his field could be dry, ‘We don’t work with the likes of Chanel.’ I didn’t mention that my only relationship with Chanel was when I’d made a huge boo-boo and was told, ‘I feel sorry for you.’ It would only have made my life sound more like Eddie’s… It reminded me of the date with TV and radio presenter Gino, whom my friends considered gay: preconceptions stick.

Chanel-more

‘Don’t look glam,’ Trustafarian warned over a weekend lunch at Westbourne Grove’s Cocotte in the lead-up to my next interview.
‘What is going on with the bloody job search this week?,’ Craig texted on Monday morning.
‘I haven’t washed my hair for today’s interview ;),’ I replied.
‘Well something has to happen for you soon or you’d better get practicing pulling pints and saying, “What can I get you sweetheart?”’

From offering their graphic design services and access to their black books to speaking to their neighbours and connecting me with their workplace recruiters, my friends have been hugely supportive. ‘Just hang in there. You’re doing everything you can,’ Monique encouraged.
‘Yes, I called a recruiter today saying that I’m flexible – aka desperate.’

It might be a cliché that we can’t have it all, but when friends come to the rescue – one good friend offers up their home, another insists on buying dinner and another comes up with a damn good plan (cat sitting during the summer holidays), having less can sometimes make you realise how much more you really have.
