The Credentials
The Costa del Sol is one of the most popular holiday destinations. Not only is it graced with 320 days of sun a year, but it offers something for everyone: crystal blue waters, great food and drink, mountain adventures and of course, plenty of culture. There are many destinations to choose from, but for a relaxing, easy-going, family-friendly trip, the Palladium Hotel in Benalmádena is the place to go.
Recently renovated, the bright and modern 4-star beachfront hotel has everything you need: two pools, a spa, seven restaurants and bars including a sky bar, luxury suites, private beach, and more. Just a 30-minute drive from Malaga airport, it’s in the perfect location to go exploring, with places like Marbella, Puerto Banús, Estepona, and Rhonda all offering wonderful day trips.
Sleep
There are 336 rooms in this bustling hotel, but even when fully occupied you wouldn’t know it. All rooms face the sea, so whatever category you choose for your holiday you can be assured of the same wonderful, relaxing view. Rooms are open and spacious, with high ceilings, balconies and tea, coffee, and water is restocked regularly. The beds are offered in a queen-size or twin set up, and I can guarantee you’re going to sleep very well…But if you really want a slice of luxury, I recommend the suites. They’re a little bigger, with large living areas, TV’s, and even bigger balconies. I was only too happy relaxing in my hotel robe with a glass of local wine, watching the sunset over the ocean after a busy day out exploring.
Dine
There are three restaurants to choose from at The Palladium Hotel Costa del Sol, with each one offering something a little different. Poseidón is a Mediterranean-style beach restaurant, with views of the ocean. Famous for its grilled rice and fish dishes, enjoy a light lunch here or reserve a table for dinner and dine from the à la carte menu. Pintarroja is the main hotel restaurant, showcasing some of the best Andalusian gastronomy, including traditional local dishes, fried and smoked fish, and even delights like poke bowls. Chang Thai is unfortunately closed at the moment but if the fine-dining restaurant is open during your stay, it’s well worth a visit.
We dined at both Poseidón and Pintarroja. At Poseidón, we enjoyed a light lunch of smoky grilled squid, and a fresh seasonal salad. The dress code is casual, so we weren’t out of place in light, daywear, fresh off the beach. We sat and soaked up the afternoon sun, with a bottle of crisp rosé.
Pintarroja is a very popular restaurant for the evening, serving buffet-style food. But don’t let the fact it’s ‘buffet style’ make it sound like it’s any less delicious. There’s everything from seafood, Paella, grilled meats, and salads to sushi and even build-your-own poke bowls. The quality of the food was second-to-none, and I was happy I could keep going back for more… and more. Those with a sweet tooth will be very satisfied with the array of desserts; small, delicate, and delicious.
Breakfast is also served in Pintarroja, and there’s everything from a traditional cooked breakfast to poached eggs on toast, fresh fruit, and pastries. We probably had about three courses each… because who doesn’t when it’s a buffet breakfast.
One place you absolutely must visit is Nix Sky Bar, a chill-out style sky lounge where you can enjoy fabulous cocktails while taking in the wonderful views. We popped up here for pre (and post) dinner drinks, as we watched the magnificent sunset.
Out and About
Whether you choose to stay local or head a little further afield, you won’t be short of things to do during your stay. You can spend hours wandering the cobbled streets of Benalmádena, or head to Malaga Town centre and take a walk through the old town, visiting historic locations and stopping for a bite to eat in one of the many delicious restaurants.
If you’re into golf, Torrequebrada Golf Course is just under 4km away, but the Costa Del Sol is bursting with amazing golf courses so you definitely won’t be short of a game if that’s what you’re looking for.
Marbella is a 39km drive away, and there’s plenty to do there too. Take a tour around the old town, dine in Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square), or settle in at one of the many Chiringuitos on the beach for the day. And if you’re into fine dining, there are more than a few Michelin star restaurants to choose from.
A few places not to miss: Rhonda, which is steeped in history; Estepona, a beautiful seaside town with winding streets lined with flowers, and Tarifa – the best beaches around and a surfer’s haven.
The Crowd
The hotel was full of all age groups: couples, families, people on business. Even if you’re travelling solo you wouldn’t feel out of place at the Palladium, and I’m sure you wouldn’t be short of friends for too long either…
The Worst Thing
It would have been great to have an alternative fine dining option available in the hotel. And with Chang Thai closed, our dresses and heels had to stay in the cupboard on this occasion.
The Best Thing
The staff really went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. They were accommodating, helpful, and incredibly friendly. My favourite part of the stay had to be hot tubs, which are on the same level as Nix Sky Bar. Imagine watching the sunset from one of those…
The Details
Deluxe rooms are priced from £134, based on two people sharing on an all-inclusive basis. The group also releases regular offers, so it’s well worth keeping an eye on the website.
