Five signs he’s not the one

My mum has a penchant for wild boys

Sometimes love isn’t enough, but knowing when to throw in the towel is never easy. It’s also hard not to babble clichés when trying to comfort someone who is going through a break-up. Sometimes the best intentions can offend rather than console.

Florist Orlando Hamilton’s philosophy on life is a good balm for heartache, ‘Love and be curious. It’s quite lovely to be open to what’s over the next horizon.’

And a little reminder of why things weren’t meant to be always helps…

Five signs he’s not the one:

  1. My mum likes him
My mum has a soft spot for good looks and charm (frankly, whose mum doesn’t!) and a knack for joint rolling (probably not on the top of most mums’ lists). She also has a penchant for wild boys.
  2. Your friends don’t. Or they do, but make note-worthy observations
‘You’ll end up in one of those artworks if you ever try to break up with him,’ Liz once said, regarding the blood-red-artwork-owning guy. She wasn’t far off.
  3. You want him to change
If your man throws his teddy out of the pram regularly now, he’ll be cantankerous Victor Meldrew at 60; if he parties all night while you’re waiting anxiously at home, then the party’s already over.
  4. He brings out your worst
He says you’re crazy. Perhaps he’s driving you crazy, but not Beyoncé-style crazy.
  5. He has his eye on his ROI
During a row/break-up he wants every gift returned to sender – including the La Perla lingerie… Better to discover this trait now than when you’re on statutory maternity pay.
