Case of the ex

‘Maybe you should go out with someone your own age, who has the perfect life and doesn’t write blogs about their private life’

The expensive beauty products belonging to his ex are still at Hot Danish’s; she’d chosen the Kelly Hoppen-style interiors for his South Kensington flat; and her interesting, successful friends are now his, too.

Hot Danish and I had our first row recently. Admittedly I was pre-menstrual, but I was annoyed that he’d lied about my age to some work associates, one of whom was joining us for dinner. ‘And please don’t mention any of those embarrassing stories from your past,’ he’d said. The same associate and his wife were friends with his ex. ‘Maybe you should just go out with someone your own age, who has the perfect life and doesn’t write blogs about their private life,’ I’d fumed during the early Friday morning phone call. ‘Or maybe you should just go back out with your ex.’ He diffused the situation by saying he loved me and we’d talk about it that evening.

During dinner with HD’s friends, work was brought up and business cards were exchanged. I emailed the interior designer, who also happened to be HD’s ex’s friend, a couple of days later to organise an interview with her. ‘What are you going to do when HD moves abroad?’ she asked during our friendly email exchange.

HD had forwarded a sales and marketing job earlier that week. I forwarded it on to Plan B asking his opinion. His response was frank; ‘Have you sent me the right job! What about the six years’ experience and the fact that it is in Geneva? Probably not creative enough for you, even if you understood the private banking industry, never mind the Swiss one. Helpful?’

I gave the interior designer a brief update. Like Plan B, she advised staying put until I had a ring on my finger. But something stuck: ‘Men can be tricky and he was once tricky with a friend of mine.’ She’d spoken to me girl to girl. It clearly wasn’t something she wanted me to repeat but I wanted HD’s reaction to know if I needed to be worried. HD’s reaction immediately put me at ease but now I’m worried he’ll bring it up with the interior designer. Or she’ll find this blog…
