The style:

Ordering take out inevitably doesn’t have quite the same buzz about it as visiting a new restaurant for the first time. Especially since the only place you’re transported to is the kitchen where you have to wash up your own dishes once you’ve finished eating. Having said that, it can come with obvious advantages – you don’t have to move, you don’t have to cook and sometimes, you get a taste of the exotic in your own home.

It was with this in mind that some friends and I sampled a Feng Sushi delivery one recent Friday night. With branches all over London it is relatively easy to arrange delivery, and they offer an extensive menu of standard sushi fare in among seasonal specials, katsu curries and desserts.

Feng Sushi use sustainably fished seafood, responsibly farmed fish and chicken, and seasonal vegetables, sourced in the UK where possible. One example of working closely with their suppliers is Silla Bjerrum, the managing director, who visited their scallop supplier Guy Grieve who hand dives for our scallops. A very environmentally friendly approach to managing the supply of scallops. Seasonality runs through every aspect of the menu with a seasonal menu that changes six times throughout the year reflecting vegetables that are in season and a champion fish.

The food:

There was a group of us so, with high expectations, we opted for a sharing platter for six. On arrival, the plate was smaller than we’d envisaged – we were convinced we’d ordered the wrong thing until we noticed six sets of chopsticks had been provided.

So we tucked into rationed portions of California rolls, sashimi and nigiri – all fresh-tasting and delicious. Everything disappeared but it was over the course of the night rather than in a culinary frenzy, as we ended up subsidising our appetites with large amounts of crisps and pretzels.

Sushi can really pack a punch when great flavours, textures and seasoning combine. On this occasion it felt like we’d picked up sushi from the high street and enjoyed it in our home rather than having the cachet of a special delivery or eating out, but on the other hand we were left wanting more… Maybe that was the point.
