Mitre pub
'The new layout is more open plan, but the interior is still cosy'

The Mitre

Open Mon–Sat 9am–midnight; Sun 9am–11pm

The style:

Despite being close to my house, I had only been to The Mitre pub once before and it was thoroughly disappointing, mainly due to a large clientele of drunk estate agents. So I was keen to see if it had improved under new management, Realpubs, who also run the North London Tavern, The Pembroke in Earl’s Court and the Duke of Sussex in Chiswick.

The new layout is more open plan, but the interior is still cosy with lots of candles and a dark-wood-and-leather-armchair theme.

The crowd:

Situated on the corner of Holland Park Avenue and Ladbroke Grove, it attracts a predominantly local crowd, apart from the occasional influx of Foxton’s employees from up the road. There’s also a good mix of ages when we went, from older parties having a meal to under-age kids being refused a drink.

The food:

There’s a raised dining area with American diner-style booths, a choice of bar snacks and a full menu, which offers a wide range of dishes from the traditional pub fare to a new take on the seafood platter (a hot platter for two boasts Shetland mussels, chilli squid, Kilpatrick oysters, seared scallops and garlic prawns; £30). We also enjoyed sweetcorn fritters and a delicious ham hock and mustard sandwich.

The drinks:

This isn’t somewhere to find an obscure ale, but there is a good range of standard upmarket pub beers, including ales from Duvel, Sierra Nevada, Anchor, Chimay and Purity; wines from around the world and a range of whiskies.
