The Blurb
Tucked away near Chelsea Harbour, Lots Road Pub exudes a warm, industrial-chic charm that feels both timeless and contemporary. A couple of weeks ago, my friend and I took a trip to the well-known establishment to sample their new menu. Exposed brick walls, dark wood furnishings, and ambient lighting create a welcoming atmosphere, while modern touches such as pendant lighting and sleek metal accents add a subtle elegance. It’s the kind of place where heritage meets style, offering a relaxed yet refined backdrop for leisurely lunches to lively evening drinks.
The Food
Our starters were served on a rustic wooden board with each dish in its designated spot for easy pickings. We kicked off our first chow down with the chorizo scotch egg. This was a great first option. The smoky, spicy flavours of the chorizo blended nicely with the sausage and soft-boiled runny egg, quite literally melting in my mouth. The chorizo gave a unique twist to the traditional Scotch egg and did not disappoint. Next up was the flat bread and spicy hummus. The hummus was slightly denser in texture compared to your standard grocery store hummus. This particular hummus was doughy and thick, but thankfully, not lacking in flavour.
So far, we had enjoyed two entrées that were fun, filling and flavourful. Left to taste were the Tandoori prawns, battered haddock and butter olives.
The olives were by far the best olives I’ve sampled, ever. My friend could attest to this. Super smooth with a good ratio of salt and juices, and not forgetting to mention that they were indeed very buttery.
Switching flavour profiles slightly, I set my eyes next on the battered haddock, with a chunky chip and mushy peas. Honestly, I really don’t think it’s possible to be disappointed with a classic fish and chips. The tartar sauce was tangy and tart, paired with the mushy peas, which were lusciously creamy.
From classic British fare to the tandoor-inspired tastes of South Asia, the Tandoori prawns were delicious and generously marinated in tasty Tandoori spices. The prawns were a pleasant prelude to the main event – our main courses.
One of the lovely staff recommended we try the pie of the day. Although, having enjoyed the battered haddock starter so much, we decided to request this as an additional main course, alongside the pie.
The pie of the day was a delightful surprise – a stodgy, golden, rich pastry, filled with shredded chicken and cheese, and mouth-watering with every bite. The flavouring was rich and sharp yet very comforting. The finely chopped fresh chives garnishing the top crust added both colour and a mild oniony flavour to the pie. Did I add that this pie was accompanied with creamy mash and warm gravy? The smooth buttery mash, dipped in the umami-laden gravy, was just *chef’s kiss*.
Moving on to the second main course, the haddock was perfectly flaky and golden, its gentle flavour paired beautifully with the chunky chips and mushy peas. I added a squeeze of lemon, along with tartar sauce and mushy peas, and that very first bite was absolutely delicious—a classic, hearty pub meal.
To finish, we sampled Lots Road pub’s newest dessert menu. Again, presented on a rustic wooden board, we had the choice of mini brownies, sticky toffee pudding and an apple and berry crumble to tuck into. When it comes to desserts, I tend to gravitate towards pretty much anything other than chocolate. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a piece of chocolate every now and then, just not a huge fan of it as a dessert. Time to eat my words; Lots Road Pub’s mini chocolate brownie, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, was a sweet tooth fantasy. It was so delicious. I could quite literally make another trip to Lots Road just for the brownie. The sticky toffee pudding and berry crumble were neck and neck. But if I had to pick a winner, the brownie would have to take the dessert crown.
