Bold and Bright

January is a tricky time for fashion. Party season with its glamour and sparkle is behind us, yet the fresh shades of spring seem a long way off.

So how to dress in this sartorial hinterland, when everyone is on a diet and our next holiday is still but a day dream? The answer is bright! Fabulous bright shades will pick up your style as well as your mood and put you in the right frame of mind to start the year.

Colour-pop jeans are going nowhere this season, and the range of shapes and hues is set to keep growing. There is something really fresh and hopeful about a bight cobalt blue. I love these skinny J Band jeans. Team them with biker boots and a parka for chillier winter days, and pick out some fabulous gold flats and a silk vest for an evening take on these eye-catching pants.

Orange hues are the brightest of the brights, and super flattering on winter complexions. Pep up your work suit or favourite jeans with this bright blouse from COS. The prim and proper style of this top helps tone down the look and lets the colour speak for itself.

Full blocks of colour might feel daunting in this grey weather, so for a more subtle approach just add a bright accessory to switch on the lights. Even a neutral outfit will gain some bright style-points from this Whistles scarf in a citrus hue. Or if you want to play it really safe, opt for these bright red heeled ballet pumps, the oh-so-pretty shape of the season.

Ladies the sun might not be shining, but our style still can. Here’s to a bold and bright start to 2013.
