RNCDesigns.co.uk is just eight months old but up-and-coming landscape gardener Ruaraidh Neville-Clarke has been covered in mud – pretty much naked, apparently – designing, gardening and building all his life. Now 25, he has a landscape design diploma from the prestigious KLC School of Design and his very own landscape design and build business based in West London.
‘I have come out the other end with some fantastic projects under my belt, great experience and reputation – and girlfriend still intact, thank God,’ he says. ‘At first I intended to work for another designer and learn the ropes. The first hurdle was the pay. Although I’m certainly not all about materials and the high life (it’s not the right industry for that), only being able to afford a packet of Hula Hoops and a carrot for lunch was never going to satisfy me for long. I’m a growing lad. Equally, I would never have been happy stuck in an office or studio. I was born to be covered in mud in very little clothing. I’m a surf-bum at heart except I’m extremely driven and proactive. I grew up on a farm and am extremely good with my hands. I can build anything if I put my mind to it and I think this is where my strength lies.’

Thought Diarmuid Gavin made gardening sexy? Ruaraidh is a younger, strapping (I sound like my mum!), tanned version with an equally incomprehensible name. Downside? He’s not single… yet.
‘I pride myself on a more adventurous approach to the London garden. There are so many gardens I see that have had enormous sums of money thrown at them but are boring! I would like to encourage people to look at interesting ways of spending their money and to get more enjoyment out of the whole process. I have a lot of fun with my clients and I’m good at getting them to be more enthusiastic and courageous with their ideas.’
