Have an average day!

‘Ibiza is overrun with people who can’t even pronounce it’

Just as the average person thinks s/he is of above average intelligence, the average person no longer wants to do average things, mix with average people and, well, be an average Joe.

It’s the reason @GS Elevator, despite the fact it’s supposed to be mocking bankers, is still so popular – we don’t just admire its wit but we secretly agree with lines such as, ‘Ibiza is overrun with people who can’t even pronounce it’ and ‘I just want to be rich enough to hate weekends. It’s when the riffraff go out.’

‘Saturday is the worst night to go out,’ Natasha said, following an evening which included a drug-addled house party followed by jostling out-of-towners to get a drink at the latest hotspot. I couldn’t agree more. Saturdays are for leisurely breakfasts, shopping at the local farmer’s market and catching up with friends and family. An average Saturday is a good day. Adventures should be sought during the week or on holidays…

However, it’s increasingly difficult to beat the holiday crowds. I thought September would be a good time to visit Italy but the best hotels are booked up. We’re taking more holidays; UK consumers took an average of 3.1 holidays in the UK or overseas during 2013, according to a survey by ABTA. Londoners took the most with 13 per cent of Londoners taking four or more foreign holidays in the past 12 months. And we’re doing more research in preparation – an average of 30 hours, according to holiday provider Club Med.

It’s time to admit that perhaps the average person has very similar tastes to our own… Which brings to mind a Dutch saying, ‘Being normal is crazy enough.’
