The Atrium, Chiswick

Places Near and Far by Sumi Sastri; The Atrium, Clayton Hotel, 626 Chiswick High Road; 14th June to 31st July 2026; FREE

This summer, Hammersmith-based artist Sumi Sastri presents her debut solo exhibition, Places Near and Far, in Chiswick – a body of work shaped by years of solo travel across some of the world’s most distinctive landscapes, from the Namib Desert and Amazon rainforest to the Iberian Peninsula and Cornwall.

The artist’s practice brings together close observation of the natural environment with an interest in how place is experienced over time. Rather than depicting landscape directly, the work explores how memory, movement and geological forces shape what we see and feel – translating these ideas into abstract compositions rooted in colour and material process.

In Places Near and Far, over thirty paintings transform these experiences into a series of contemporary works that emphasise atmosphere and change over fixed representation. Using a deliberately restricted palette and layered acrylic techniques, the paintings build depth and texture, evoking the shifting conditions of each environment – from the red mineral intensity of desert landscapes to the dense, immersive tones of the rainforest.
