Mexico Dome

Mexico Dome – Interactive Exhibition

2015 is the year of Mexico in the UK and an amazing interactive exhibition has popped up right next to Tower Bridge.

Thought Mexico was all sombreros, cartels and tequila? Think again. Not only is it beautiful, brimming with culture, gastronomy, nature and art, but it’s fast becoming incredibly modern and advanced. Combined with its rich and inspiring history, this makes it one of the most exciting countries in the world today.

The dome’s entire ceiling is a moving screen, changing from Mexican ocean life, to the sunny Mexican skies, to the arid countryside, and a million things in between.

The dome is filled with cutting-edge interactive toys ranging from dress-me dolls, using yourself, and operated by pressing buttons in thin air, to the astonishing Occulus 3D flying experiences where you can hand-glide over rural Mexico, or swerve around Mexico City’s skyscrapers on a drone. These were out-of-this-world fun. You can even look around and up and down and see everything behind and above you as you fly through the air. I’m ashamed to admit I had little idea of modern Mexico, but having flown across Mexico City I’m gagging to visit. The architecture feels crazy-modern, which is even better when juxtaposed with the stunning landscape that surrounds it.

All these amazing technologies are interspersed with more traditional displays of Mexican craftsmanship and heritage, sculptures, costumes, and lots of written information too.

I ‘dressed up’ in a traditional Mexican costume, below.

By far the most exciting experience was flying around Mexico City on a drone, I didn’t think I was into techy special effects, but this was so realistic, you have to sit down and hold rails to stop yourself from falling over. I’ll be heading back to the dome as soon as possible to spend more quality time in Mexico!

Mexico is the only nation to have its cuisine designated by UNESCO as of Intangible Heritage of Humanity. After working up an appetite for this vibrant country within the dome, visitors can sample authentic Mexican cuisine outside the exhibition, with fresh market food prepared by acclaimed Mexican restaurant, Wahaca.

Best of all, entry to the Mexico Dome is free and it’s open to the general public from Feb 26 – March 12. It’s slap bang in the middle of Potters Field Park next to City Hall. Open from 10am – 8pm. Find out more here.
