The Kimpton Rowan, Palm Springs

Kate Elliott chases the sun at The Kimpton Rowan, Palm Springs

What they say

An ethereal desert beauty permeates every experience at Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel, where urban enchantments meet epic scenery. The 153 soothing, spacious guest rooms and suites offer a restorative retreat after heart-thumping adventures on rugged trails or in the lively nightlife scenes. At the rooftop pool and bar, pair brilliant sunsets with masterful cocktails. Dine at one of our two chef-driven restaurants featuring seasonal, shareable small plates made from fresh, local ingredients. From vista points like our refreshing rooftop deck or the two-story cinematic window in the lobby, the views are stunning and unsurpassed. Embrace our desert dreamland.

Sleep

We arrived at the stunning Kimpton Rowan in the afternoon after a drive through the desert from LA and were greeted by some friendly staff and shown to our rooms; not before checking out the beautiful lobby on the way up! We had a spacious modern room with huge flat windows that allowed the living area to be lit up in the desert sun. The walls that divided each section of the room were designed so cleverly that made the room feel spacious and unique. Outside was a view of the mountains and a selection of large sculptures, including a fabulous Marilyn Monroe statue. Our bed was wide and comfortable and the room had everything you could possibly need for an extended stay. As soon as we were upstairs, I received a text from the front desk to check that we had everything we needed, which was a lovely touch.

Dine

Kimpton hotels provide morning coffee in the lobby, which means you get complimentary coffee, made the proper way, without having to faff around in your rooms with a machine and packeted milk. They also provide a wine hour in the afternoons, where we sampled a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon, Prosecco, Chardonnay and Spanish beer.

The hotel consists of two restaurants, The Four Saints and the Juniper Table, which offer selected menus all year round as well as a bar in the main lobby and on the rooftop.

The Crowd

Palm Springs is known for its population of retired Hollywood veterans and vacationing city dwellers and the Kimpton Rowan hosted a variety of working professionals who sunned themselves by the pool with cocktails and snacks all afternoon. I didn’t see any families, but we were there in the middle of the week!

Out and About

Most visitors in Palm Springs are there for the sun, so you could absolutely stay by the pool for your entire visit. Sandwiched in between a restaurant and bar, the pool provides towels, water and table service and a beautiful view of the desert mountains.

The rest of Palm Springs is like a giant resort stretching along the main streets, with gift shops and restaurants for every budget.

If you’re looking for an adventure to accompany your stay, then Joshua Tree National Park is a short drive away from the hotel and well worth a visit: otherworldly and so different in terrain from anything you’d see in Europe!

The Best Thing

I loved the magnitude of the hotel’s design, with giant statement pieces clashing beautifully with the angular shape of the space. The main lobby also features a modern fireplace, minimal Art Deco, new wave art hangings, and a wall of books. It was a very classy take on the fun kitschiness associated with Palm Springs.

The Worst Thing

I would have appreciated some complimentary water in our rooms, however, there were water fountains in all the public spaces, so I’d just recommend filling up your bottles before bed!
