Monte Carlo Attractions

From the Grand Prix to oceanography, we outline some of the biggest draws of Mediterranean gem Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is one of the true gems of the Mediterranean, and for those in the UK it’s also one of the most exotic destinations in the world that’s actually not too far away. Known for its glamorous appeal, it’s also a great spot for relaxation and entertainment, making it the complete package. Below, we’ll outline a few of the main draws during a stay in this one-of-a-kind Mediterranean getaway.

The Oceanographic Museum

It might seem strange to consider an indoor destination as a must-see part of such a picturesque destination, but this particular museum is well worth making time for. Built like a monument to the sea on a cliff overlooking the water, it’s breathtaking to behold and even better to explore. From rooftop views, to extraordinary wildlife, to a man-made (or at least man-aided) coral reef on the lowest floor, there’s a lot to enjoy. Plus, if you happen to be a history buff, you might enjoy the fact that famed diver Jacques Cousteau was once the curator.

Casino de Monte Carlo

In the UK, most people aren’t very attuned to the charms of in-person casinos these days. We’ve grown used to a burgeoning market of online gaming entertainment in this particular genre, with a range of sites offering all the table games, slot machines, and other entertainment one could want from a casino. But this venue remains special even in an industry that has largely migrated to the internet. It’s old, ornate, and beautiful, calling to mind cinematic scenes of high rollers stacking chips. You can play in the casino if you want, but truthfully it’s fun just to stroll through the magnificent courtyard in front of it and explore the interior as a spectator.

Port Hercule

There might not be a more beautiful harbour in the world. You’ve undoubtedly seen pictures or postcards of the Monte Carlo port, curving into the city and packed with elegant white yachts and sailboats. It’s an incredible place to take in even if you’re just out for a walk. If you want to spend a little money, you can also charter some time on one of the boats and enjoy an afternoon out on the sea looking back at Monte Carlo.

The Grand Prix

This isn’t something you can enjoy just any old time, but if you get a chance to visit Monte Carlo during the Monaco Grand Prix of Formula 1 racing, you absolutely should. There’s something vintage about the sport when it’s seen in this particular location, and it also happens to be one of the most competitive races in the world. The Monte Carlo circuit has been ranked as one of the best in the history of the sport, and the fanfare surrounding the event is something to behold. If you feel like splurging, you can even book some space on one of the aforementioned Port Hercule boats to watch the race from the harbour!

Palais Princier

It’s sort of an unusual palace, but the dwelling of Monaco’s prince is still worth stopping to take a look at, especially if you happen to be strolling by during the changing of the guard. You can also book a tour if you’re interested, and the interior is even more elegant and impressive than the outside—which is striking, but not what you imagine when you hear the word “palace.”
