Alpin Juwel

Kate Elliott ventures to the sustainable wellness haven meets ski resort, The Aplin Juwel, Saalbach

The Credentials

We arrived under the cover of darkness, after a smooth airport pickup by the lovely Amira. As we wound our way through the silent Salzburg countryside, the mountains loomed invisible, just shapes in the dark. Then, like a warm beacon in the night, Alpin Juwel appeared with a comforting glow in the middle of the valley.

Nestled in the charming village of Saalbach Hinterglemm, Alpin Juwel is an organic, sustainably run hotel that blends traditional Austrian hospitality with a modern ethos of wellness. Every detail of your stay has been thought through, from the decor to the food and hospitality.

Style

Stepping through the doors felt like entering a luxurious alpine lodge — all pine, stone, candles, sheepskin and soft lighting. Upon arrival, we were seated for a late dinner in sculpted horn-backed chairs beside a grand chandelier overlooking a wooden staircase. The scent of wood and the faint sound of traditional music in the air (yes, there was a live band) set the scene for our stay.

Sleep

Our suite was everything you could want from an alpine retreat. Stripped back, spacious and wood-lined, it featured a built-in bench and table, a balcony overlooking the hills and a viewing window seat large enough to sleep two. The bathroom was generously sized with a rain shower and a lengthy mirror. In keeping with the wellness theme, a selection of herbal teas awaited us in the room (there are plenty of options for coffee at breakfast), and I took more than one opportunity during our stay to sit with a cuppa and stare out of the viewing window into the wild.

Dine

We opted for the half-board option for our stay, which includes a four-course meal at dinner, breakfast and a ‘light snack’ in the afternoon. The food here is extraordinary — rooted in tradition, yet elevated with creativity. Each night, the menu changes, offering cuisine with both vegan and meat-based options.

Though every single dish we tried was delicious, what stood out the most were those that swayed towards traditional Austrian. A special mention goes to the modern takes on stroganoff, pork neck with spelt dumplings and a cheese polenta (I could have eaten 20 of these). There is also a buffet brimming with fresh options – a fish, salad and pasta bar, an ice cream station with endless sprinkles – awaits those who want something extra.

Mornings at Alpin Juwel are a celebration of health and indulgence in equal measure. You can prepare your own fruit juices, shots and even take wellness supplements. The buffet offers fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, pastries, pancakes and waffles, alongside a hearty cooked breakfast for those who need fuel for a day in the mountains.

Though there are plenty of restaurants nearby to visit for lunch, the ‘light snacks’ promised for the afternoon equated to something nearer to a full on lunch spread. You can opt for a healthy option here, or you can go for the pizza (I was tempted far too often) and strudel (the best I tried on our week-long trip to Austria).

The commitment to sustainability here isn’t about compromise either; it’s about doing things better. Even the beers, such as the organic Stiegl Estate beer, are organic, rich, satisfying, and clearly chosen with care. There is also an impressive wine list, and of course, a wide selection of Austrian Schnapps.

The Spa

The spa is where Alpin Juwel truly becomes something magical. The design feels like a mystical rainforest, featuring lush plants, hanging chairs, and endless hidden nooks for rest and restoration. The outdoor pool looks out across the mountains, while a private sauna with panoramic views offers deep relaxation. Inside, a selection of thoughtfully curated saunas scatter throughout the space, including infrared. There’s a curated tea station, healthy snacks, and infused waters throughout. You could spend hours here, and we did. It’s good to remind my fellow Londoners that spa culture is a little different here, but no one judges a Brit for keeping their swimmers on.

Out & About

The surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Hikes cater to all levels, and a detailed map plus easy-to-use free transport for all guests make exploration easy.

In summer, the area comes alive with families enjoying activities like cycling and outdoor escape rooms, and adventurers using the cable cars to hike to the very top of the surrounding mountains, whilst the wellness classes (yoga with a mountain view is not to be missed) provide a more serene option for slower living. In winter, of course, it becomes a ski haven.

In the evening, the hotel has a daily list of wholesome activities, from sound baths to traditional live music. UNO cards sit on every table, free popcorn flows at the bar — it’s warm, sociable and cosy.

The Worst Thing

I can’t really fault the Alpin Juwel.

I’d say that due to Austrian efficiency, we needed to stay at the same table in the restaurant for all meals. The downside to this was that I didn’t get to try out every cute nook and cranny in the dining areas (a hobby of mine), but the upside is efficiency. The service was brilliant, and we would often come up in the morning to a note for our table, far more personal than sliding under the bedroom door.

The Best Thing

The great outdoors, the food, and the spa were everything I could have asked for. The hotel is a glorious escape for anyone looking for wellness in nature.
