How to choose whisky as a gift for someone who takes it seriously

Region tells you most of the flavour
Scotch splits into a handful of regions, and each has a house style you can more or less count on. Islay whiskies are smoky and medicinal, the ones that taste of bonfires and seaweed. Speyside and the Highlands are the safer middle. A Speyside single malt is the closest thing to a crowd-pleaser for someone whose exact taste you’re unsure of.
Don’t overlook Australian whisky either. A well-chosen Tasmanian bottle reads as thoughtful in a way another supermarket Glenfiddich doesn’t.
If you’re buying bourbon or rye instead, the rules shift. Those are American and tend to be sweeter, often cheaper for the quality than an equivalent Scotch. A good rye is a fair pick for someone who likes an Old Fashioned.
