But what if Grazia is put off commissioning me to write a ‘dating’ column because I’m not going on any dates?

I try to talk to a person I haven’t met before when I go to events. If you wait for someone to approach you, the person approaching is likely to be a weirdo (similarly when you go to Q&A sessions, it’s usually the freaks/fanatics who ask obscure questions) – although I’m not sure what that says about me and sometimes it can’t be avoided. This week I had two successive days of guys leaping in my path to chat me up. These men would not make successful charity volunteers; one of them asked if I dyed my hair! Funnily enough, I’m not getting tempted to break my self-imposed three-month dating ban.

At the launch of Coach’s flagship store on New Bond Street, Natasha and I met a very broad Swedish guy, who proved entertaining company. A New York skyline had been set up and a photographer was on hand. We got a great photo of the Giant Swede lifting Natasha and me simultaneously as if we were a couple of books. As we paused on the stairs on the way to the ground floor I saw a wall of people outside the store looking in my direction. I was wearing a gorgeous Acne number and had just had my hair done. ‘Did you see Gwyneth Paltrow walk past?’ Natasha asked. Oh well.

However, we received VIP treatment at The Lonsdale the following evening. The bar area was full, so Damian, the doorman, took my hand and made his way authoritatively through the crowd, telling people to watch their backs before reaching a table at the back of the room for us. Perhaps I’ll get looked after like this everywhere I go when my column becomes a book and then a film…

But what if Grazia is put off commissioning me to write a ‘dating’ column because I’m not going on any dates? I noticed on Facebook that one of my friends is related to a so-hot-right-now singer-songwriter. Of course, arranging a date with someone who is currently playing sell-out gigs around the country and has girls throwing themselves at him is a challenge in itself…
