‘Men have to do most of the work, if you think about it’

At first I thought Tom was a bit down when we met at West Thirty Six on Saturday evening, but after we’d ordered a couple of 36 Collins I discovered he was knackered. A Tinder match on Thursday led to a late-night drink the following night…

‘Let’s see a pic of her,’ I asked. She was hot. Smart and wealthy, too, it seemed.
‘She’s got kids and is going through a divorce,’ Tom said, concerned I was getting ahead of myself. I got the impression it wasn’t the ‘baggage’ that was giving Tom doubts. ‘I don’t really know her,’ he said. ‘She kept saying how amazing my body is, which was nice to hear, but it’s not, is it?’
‘You’re wondering if she sleeps with every guy the first night, aren’t you?’
‘I guess that’s it. And she wants to see me on Wednesday – I’m not sure if I’ll have recovered by then. I had to do the walk of shame wearing last night’s jacket in today’s heat…’ he trailed off as the waiter arrived with our starters.

‘You know what it’s like when you first spend the night with someone,’ Tom confided by the time we were halfway through a bottle of Chablis. ‘You can’t relax in case you fart or something so you don’t get a wink of sleep. And it was hot so we were practically glued to each other. Plus, she was insatiable. It was exhausting.’ I was laughing by then. ‘Men have to do most of the work, if you think about it,’ Tom continued, earnestly.

Tom had told his date that he was catching up with me. She messaged him during our mains asking what he was up to. Tom let her know I thought she was hot. ‘Whomever I go out with will have to accept me having female friends, too,’ he said.
‘Just have fun on Wednesday and try not to think about things too much,’ I said. ‘At least you’re getting some.’

Meanwhile, I’m trying to heed Mark’s advice – ‘Just say no’ – and Trustafarian’s recommendation, ‘Make sure he has decent shoes and a good watch.’ A cute Dutch boy approached me on the tube to tell me I looked beautiful and ask if I had a boyfriend. ‘No, but I think there’s too big an age gap between us,’ I replied reluctantly.
