Watson and OMGYes want to change the cultural myth of the female orgasm

Scrolling through my Facebook feed during the last week has revealed some rather ribald stories: the German guy who managed to accidentally kill his lover during a cucumber sex game (I wonder how he explained that one to his wife); the fingering meditation classes apparently taking off in the capital (though I couldn’t find any reviews so I’m not sure who really is attending them); and a picture of a restaurant in Japan where you can eat from women’s bums (I’m pretty sure the picture was swiftly taken down by Facebook rather than the friend who posted it).

When I mentioned the stories to Harry, he already knew about them and added another: actress Emma Watson has championed OMGYes, which offers highly detailed videos on achieving the female orgasm on a site used by equal numbers of men and women. Harry directed me to the no-holds-barred demonstration video of a woman showing what works for her. ‘I can’t believe anyone can view this,’ I said.

Watson and OMGYes want to change the cultural myth of the female orgasm, which is largely peddled by Hollywood. In reality, very few women (8 per cent according to the latest research) can reliably achieve an orgasm from ‘unassisted’ aka ‘hands-free’ heterosexual intercourse alone.

This makes a little more sense when we know that the clitoris is made from the same foetal tissue as the penis. In which case, it can’t help but precipitate orgasms too. The clitoris’ location is probably an anatomical anomaly (rather like male nipples) that accounts for most women’s inability to experience Hollywood-style orgasms.

So, among some of the snigger-inducing stories of the last week, Harry and I learnt a fact or two, though I don’t think either of us will be signing up to an OM class or downloading OMGYes’ interactive virtual vagina app.
