West London Girl

An inadequate response

I was shocked by The Guardian’s click-bait article

Not much shocks these days. Tell a friend about the clothes cutting incident towards the end of one relationship and she’ll tell you about the ex who put her clothes in a blender; one friend has admitted to filing for personal bankruptcy twice because of her shopping addiction, but she has nothing on Wolf of Wall Street-style excess stories of nostalgic banking friends; and there’s the friend who has so much bad luck that I’m beginning to wonder if she’s related to the Kennedys…

But I was shocked by The Guardian’s click-bait article (surely this is Daily Mail territory) by Simon Jenkins, a columnist and former editor of The Times, in which he wrote that Pistorius should not have gone to prison because it would serve no purpose and his life was already ‘ruined’ by what happened. Er, what about his victim Reeva Steenkamp’s life? Notwithstanding the fact that he could repeat his offence, particularly considering his violent history. It’s worth noting that in South Africa, a woman is killed by domestic violence on average every eight hours. In the UK, on average, two women a week are killed by a current or former male partner.

I only read Simon Jenkins’ offensive article after a friend posted a link to Kat Lister’s thoughtful response to it on Facebook. This means that at least most people are not only appalled by the inadequacy of the Pistorius verdict but also of the inadequacy of our global culture, too.
