Eugenie Nuttall, the Jeannie McQueeny label designer, on where she’ll be this London Fashion Week and where she likes to shop and holiday

Where do you live and why?

My first home is the Bahamas – I was born there and having had an idyllic childhood, being there nourishes and inspires me. I love the colours of the sea, the morning birdsong, the scent of night-blooming jasmine and of course, the people. I also live in Chelsea. London is a gigantic cornucopia of what’s best in life from fashion to theatre, restaurants, museums, parks – and of course, the people. There’s always something new to discover which is coupled with the romance of history – I adore the place!

How did you get interested in designing, when did you start?

My interest in designing probably began in childhood. My grandmother opened the first dress boutique in the Bahamas and she and my mother were always designing clothes and accessories and redecorating their homes. Therefore, attention to detail and beauty has always been an integral part of my life.

What makes your collection different?

I believe the fact that every piece is made by hand using quite ancient methods is unique. There’s an extraordinary attention to detail in each piece of clothing and many truly are works of art.

What’s your favourite destination for shopping and holiday?

London for the quirky fun of the place and the people. Rome is another favourite for the unexpected beauty found around every corner.

You do a lot of travelling. What is the most essential piece to pack?

One of my pashmina tunics. It can go from country to city with equal ease.

What key accessory should every woman have in their wardrobe?

A marvellous kaftan as it adds instant glamour to every wardrobe.

What’s your most memorable west London meal?

That would have to have been the one I had last December at Nahm at The Halkin [5 Halkin Street, SW1X]. My son Alexander (who is now a chef) was doing an internship in their splendid Thai restaurant. To my great delight, I discovered that he’d made two of the dishes I liked best.

What was the last show saw in London?

The End of the Rainbow. The star, Tracie Bennett, gave a brilliant performance – one felt almost voyeuristic  watching her depiction of Judy Garland at the end of her life, still brimming talent, and pathos and mischief. Her voice was superb and the music splendid.

What’s your philosophy on life?

That it’s not a dress rehearsal – life wants to be lived and loved now, with integrity and with gratitude for its many blessings.

What’s in your secret west London address book?

Almost all of Motcombe Street – Pantechnicon serves the best roast chicken, then Rococo chocolates has hot chocolate to die for on a winter afternoon. Ottolenghi is a great little deli and I’ll visit Glow Urban Spa [now Hushh] for a pampering treat. Finally, John Sandoe on Blacklands Terrace for books.

What are your not-to-be missed show choices for this London Fashion Week?

Vivienne Westwood for her wonderful eccentricity and beautiful dresses, John Rocha and Maria Grachvogel.

And what will be your must-catch after party?

I’ll be dropping in for a cocktail at The Red Rooms on Sunday for the Osman after party hosted by Tank magazine and will also visit the Imagine Fashion pop-up showcase at the Hospital Club on Tuesday 22 February.

What’s next for Jeannie McQueeny?

I’m currently adding to my line for BREEF (Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation), a foundation that was set up by my late husband to address concerns on the state of the marine environment. I also plan to develop my jewellery line with large hand-made gold cuffs with rock crystal and aquamarine stones.

The latest Jeannie McQueeny collection is available at Harrods and also Harrods International at Heathrow, Terminal 5; www.jeanniemcqueeny.com

Where do you live and why?

Having grown up between Islington and Scotland, I’ve lived in Parson’s Green most of my adult life. I love village atmosphere, the mix of ‘country’ pubs, young families, and its proximity to the King’s Road.

How did you get into cooking, is
