Wumman Spa

Just moments from Bond Street Station, at the southern end of Great Portland Street, a burgeoning beauty and cosmetic scene is quietly taking shape. Amongst its rising stars is Wumman Spa, founded by Brazilian-born Paloma Buddemeier. Though open for just two years, the salon has already established itself as a cornerstone of this emerging enclave. From the outside, its sleek matte olive frontage signals a refined, pared-back aesthetic—one seldom synonymous with nails and manicures.

Inside, the design leans towards that of a stylish cafe and deli: rattan rugs, sculptural light fittings, and artisan-style work aprons with brass detailing. Put it this way, if I’d wandered in by accident, I might be forgiven for ordering a seeded organic sourdough and a flat white…

The Process

Instead I’m here to try the deluxe mani-pedi: a full manicure and pedicure finished with shellac. I’m usually hesitant when it comes to bold colours or trends, but a golden cat’s-eye shade piques my interest—and I decide, for once in my life, to be ultra brave. Fortune favours the brave after all, so if I walk away feeling lucky and with nice nails I’ll be winning.

Pinky is endlessly warm, and we immediately fall into easy conversation, discovering our daughters were born in the same month. If you’ve never seen a cat’s-eye nail (firstly, congratulations on maintaining a healthy relationship with social media) but also, they’re mesmerising. The process feels part treatment, part sorcery: a polish infused with fine metallic particles is applied, then redirected with a very powerful magnet to create that signature, light-catching effect. The result is sleek, luminous and particularly striking in the warm honeyed shade I’ve chosen. I love it so much I immediately commit to matching toes. We’re going all in!

Downstairs, the pedicure begins with a soak in a warm, softly scented foot bath. Then it’s straight into the cuticles and calluses (it’s been a while). A lavender mud masque follows, before a thorough scrub and the micro-planing which leaves the soles of my feet incredibly smooth. There’s a masque, steam treatment and an invigorating foot and calf massage to finish. It’s at this point I consider cancelling the rest of my day and just… having a little sleep.

The Results

I don’t. Instead, I emerge from Wumman Spa a mere two hours later feeling utterly restored, polished and put together. The cat’s eye is such a huge success, I’m practically purring. My nails catch the light in that subtle, expensive way… eye-catching, but versatile enough to work with everything I own. As for my toes… well, sandal season is surely on the horizon. One can only hope. And if and when it comes, I’ll be ready for it.
