RYS Hair and Beauty, Chelsea

Kenyan-born, Reshma Shah, who began her career working internationally as a buyer in children’s fashion found herself inspired by Asia’s exquisite level of customer service. Frustrated not to be able to find a convenient equivalent on home shores, Reshma took matters into her own hands and founded RYS Hair and Beauty with a vision to elevate the British salon experience to the next level.

With it’s opulent surroundings, cutting-edge treatment menu and the latest in health and beauty technology, RYS is a one-stop-shop. Between the busy salon floor and the secluded treatment rooms on the upper floor, clients can expect everything from the ‘Chelsea Blow-Dry’ to reflexology, there’s Japanese acupuncture, eyebrow styling, waxing and more.

I visit RYS at the beginning of a three-day heatwave. It’s located on Walton Street, a charming, white-washed terrace a short walk from the hustle and bustle of South Ken. RYS is nestled amidst exquisite company; Chanel, Melissa Obadash and Isabel Marant – in the sunshine, the tranquil street feels positively Cornish, is that a seagull? Might treat myself to an ice cream! But first things first, I’m late for my mani-pedi with the much sought-after Oksana and it would be rude to keep her waiting.

Style

Inside, the vibe is a little more St Tropez than St Ives. Slate-clad walls meet opulent beige leather and stained wood surfaces. Beyond the French windows, is a pretty whitewashed ‘styling garden’ complete with living wall, cocktail bar and draped climbers.

There are fully equipped hair stations, which Reshma tells me were a godsend during covid, but now, (weather permitting) provide the ultimate in luxury experience: alfresco grooming!

The Process

Oksana gets to work on my nails, I’m embarrassed to be providing her with quite the ‘before picture’ – thanks pregnancy – gnarly broken claws that haven’t seen a lick of polish or an emery board in months.

I choose a creamy pink OPI shellack colour to reflect my beachy mood and wait for her to work her magic. And magic she does work!

The Results

Oksana is extremely knowledgeable and according to our sources, in high demand. She uses Ukrainian products that are the best in the business and performs a Russian-style manicure which eliminates the cuticle entirely using a gentle electronic file. This creates a super smooth finish that lasts twice as long as a regular manicure – and as I edit this, three weeks later – I can confirm, it’s still looking flawless.

Gel/Shellac manicure with Oksana starts from £60

A pedicure with file, cuticles, massage and polish is also £60
