Tucked down a leafy Chiswick side street, just moments away from the hustle and bustle of Devonshire Road, is the barely one-year-old MAYFIVE Hair Salon. Owner Katie Allan – who has fifteen years in the business behind her including a long stint at Charles Worthington – who founded the salon in 2018, places an emphasis on enhancing your natural beauty. And we should probably mention that MAYFIVE prides itself on being more than a little dog-friendly!
The salon was a finalist in the 2019 Creative Head Most Wanted Awards for Best New Boutique Salon, and founder Katie herself was a finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year – not bad for your first year in business.
The Process
After very kindly making allowances for me running almost 20 minutes late, I was welcomed into the salon as warmly and calmly as you could wish; aside from Ralphie the resident dog, who couldn’t have seemed more excited to see me! If you’ve got a pooch of your own to keep Ralphie company MAYFIVE will welcome them as warmly as they do their clients.
The salon itself has a laid-back, leafy appeal, with greenery everywhere, wood floors and plenty of space. It is unpretentious, unfussy and oozes a youthful chic. You’ll feel like you’ve genuinely stumbled upon a hidden gem!
After a good long consultation about, not just my hair type (which I frequently feel like I disagree with hairdressers about, but not here), but also how I like to style my hair, any concerns I’ve got with its condition/colour etc, we scroll both through my Pinterest board and the salons own Instagram to settle on what I want.
The wash, cut and blowdry felt like it absolutely flew by; my stylist was so chatty and friendly there was none of the awkward staring at your own face in silence for an hour, and she worked briskly and knowledgably. While I sipped an excellent coffee, she did a beautiful job of doing exactly what I’d asked (which almost NEVER happens even in hairdressers three times the price). And to finish things off my ‘undone’ blow-dry was spot-on!
The Results
I felt listened to by my stylist for the first time in a good long while, and ended up with a brilliantly low-maintenance cut that (I think on the way home) turned a few heads!
