The Process
As a total newbie to permanent makeup, I opted for a subtle accentuation of my natural freckles; a constellation dusted over the bridge of the nose where the light naturally hits, with a delicate scattering outward across the top of the cheeks.
It might be a good place to point out that permanent is a bit of a misnomer with faux freckles. They typically last about a year, as long as you don’t use actives like retinoids, glycolic acids or vitamin C serums on the treated area.
After the first session, the freckles were very, ahem, apparent for a couple of days. Despite having been warned about this, I did have a momentary second of panic when I woke up on day two, reminiscent of Annie in a stage production, freckles bright enough to beam through under theatrical lights.
But I needn’t have worried! After a week or so, they had faded so much that I could hardly see them. Faux freckles are applied across two sessions for this reason, with the same freckles being treated twice, and the option to add some additional fainter ones at the second session contributing to the sense of realism.
The only thing I struggled with was not being able to wash the area or use skincare (even SPF) for a few days. As an SPF obsessive in the midst of Britain’s hottest heatwave, I committed the cardinal sin, and did, in fact, use an SPF balm on the area (I’m so sorry, Sian)!
The Results
They’re so natural looking no one would ever guess I’d done more than sat outside for a few days. But unlike my own, rather splodgy, natural freckles, Sian made the new additions tighter and more defined, just as I’d requested.
Most significantly, the colour match is perfect – indistinguishable from the real freckles that surround them.
Had I known how well they’d come out, I’d have asked for twice as many. And I will, when I go back for a top up next year!
