Brazilian Hair Straightening System aka Keratin Treatment

The Blurb:

I am a curly girl. Like most curly girls, I’ve struggled with my hair, I’ve had various cuts, processed it, straightened it with all manner of implements, and even tried hiding them with ponytails. It’s not that I don’t like curls. It’s just that I don’t like the unmanageability of them.

When I heard about Hair Organics, I thought, ‘Why not? I’ve tried everything else.’ Terry from Hair Organics is an experienced stylist hailing from New Zealand. His experience with hairstyling and make-up for the past 11 years in London has given him the chance to experience a wide variety of processes for hair care. One can only see the excitement when he describes the Keratin treatment and how it’s changed his clients’ lives. I decided to try it for myself.

The Process:

The consultation is brief and consists of an overview of the process, a discussion of my hair consistency and struggles, and an explanation of the product and expected results. Then, my hair was washed, the keratin was applied and combed through, and my hair blow-dried and then heat-set with a hair straightener.

The only downside is that the treatment takes over two hours. Of course, that’s not unusual for hair straightening techniques. Everything else is great. The product doesn’t smell bad (as other processes which are chemical-based can); the stylist spends most of the time blow-drying it beautifully, and setting it so that you are ready to go out on the town. Terry’s advice for the next few days includes not getting the hair wet for three full days and using a hair dryer to blow it out in the morning to get rid of bed head and avoid any unwanted kinks. Interestingly, not all of his clients are curly girls. Rather, the procedure seems to help people with all sorts of concerns, but particularly dealing with the frizz problem.

The Result:

After the requisite three days of not washing my hair, I woke up and showered dutifully with the prescribed shampoo and conditioner, only to be disappointed that my curls reappeared! Staying calm and remembering Terry’s description of what would happen, I let my hair air-dry for a while, only to discover more curls. Then, I decided to see if what he said was true. Would the hair drying take only a few minutes? I put the dryer to my hair and discovered to my pleasure that I accomplished in three minutes what I couldn’t normally do in an hour. What I have come to appreciate is that by using the Keratin process, I now have the best of both worlds. If I want to flaunt my curls (and much more manageable ones at that) or if I want a straight day, I can choose. I now have much easier access to either look. What more can a curly girl ask for?

Treatment start from £150 and last from two to five months.
