Kahani, Sloane Square

Blurb

Based in Chelsea, nestled down in one of the quieter side streets near Sloane Square is Kahani – an Indian restaurant offering a menu that is both exciting and pleasantly familiar. Michelin-starred Chef, Peter Joseph is at the helm and pairs his enviable experience cooking both Indian and British cuisine.

Style

It’s a formal yet relaxed scene at Kahani, with tables dotted around an open area and booths nestled away at the sides. Thursday is Jazz night, which I very much enjoyed. There’s something about a live band playing soothing lounge music that makes one feel a bit special, like dining in a restaurant from a film scene, as if momentarily placed in a world away from your own.

Food

We sampled a variety of plates both of our own choosing (and some recommended) that included tender chargrilled chicken with mustard oil, Rajasthani spices and chickpea raitha, perfectly chewy lamb seekh kebab, water chestnut, green chilli, coriander, ginger and black olive crumb and… a highlight, Tandoor lamb chops with Kashmiri-chillies and Nagercoil clove. I haven’t cooked lamb chops myself for a while now and after having these, I don’t think I’ll bother. What would be the point now? These chops were perfection. Thick, juicy slabs of meat that slipped from the bone and onto my waiting fork. I’ve often said that you can tell a lot about a restaurant by the kind of bread it serves, which makes judging Kahani all that easier because after two (maybe three…) servings of cheese chilli naan I was sold. It came as little surprise to see a Deliveroo rider picking up a couple of batches for a lucky customer when it came time to leave.

Desserts did not disappoint, a slightly scandalous Chocolate delight, almond brittle and mandarin ice cream as well as Masala Chai Paris-Brest, Nankhatai with chocolate hazelnut ice-cream rounded out the evening perfectly.

In a Nutshell

I’ll be going back to Kahani again. Despite leaving very full, there was so much of the menu that we didn’t get to try. Indeed, alongside the a la carte there’s also a full tasting menu to look forward to for next time as well as the excellent service and maybe (probably), more cheese chill Naan.
