West London welcomes an unspoilt gem of a pub back to the neighbourhood! Warm, cosy and serving delicious food in the shadow of Queen’s Tennis Club it’s set to win over Barons Court game, set and match.
Tucked away down a leafy side street, The Colton Arms offers all-day dining, serving up a mixture of British classics and modern European plates in a beautiful setting with an intimate bar area, charming outdoor terrace and indoor ‘Raquet Room’ glass conservatory.
The pub feels both historical and contemporary, there’s a contrast between the small rooms and alcoves near the entrance, and the larger open-plan dining area and garden. Lighting is flattering but strong enough, and the food is incredible.
Previously owned by the same family for 52 years, The Colton Arms was looking a little tired but its well-loved period features have been retained by new owners, husband and wife team Rupert and Jo Clevely in the design of the pub, such as the copper bar, original tongue and groove panelling, log fire and handsomely carved antique wooden furniture. Muted tones of deep blue, green and slate grey perfectly offset the gleaming polished brass and copper used throughout the space and the contemporary tiles and quirky light fittings bring the new look venue up to date.
The pub serves an eclectic menu embracing the great traditions of the British pub with Black Pudding Sausage Rolls, Scotch Eggs, Fish & Chips and even a traditional Ploughman’s, alongside more cosmopolitan cuisine with signature dishes including Crispy Pork Belly with Root Vegetables and Apple Sauce, Salmon, Lentils, Spinach and Watercress, and the Chicken Schnitzel with a Fried Duck Egg.
The Cheese Soufflé was to die for, and I’m not ashamed to admit, has permeated my dreams ever since. Other honourable mentions go out to the Hanger Steak (the accompanying bernaise hit the perfect note between tart yet creamy), and the Cheeseburger, worth writing home about for its brioche bun alone. As pub food goes this is haute cuisine.
The Colton’s small but perfectly formed cellar features a regularly rotating series of craft beers and a well-priced selection of wines and cocktails. The wine list has been expertly chosen by Rupert’s 89 year old father, a master of wine and whose taste buds show no signs of slowing down.
