Recognising National Vegetarian Week at The Gate Restaurant

Nothing gets much better than free pizza, right? That’s right, with National Vegetarian Week having just passed at the end of May, the Vegetarian Society visited seven cities across the country giving out free slices of pizza, bringing food and people together.

Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive of the Vegetarian Society, said “We wanted to get out and share delicious veggie food with as many people as possible during the week. Recent studies have shown that around 20 per cent of the population are choosing to eat more meat-free meals so this is great way for us to show how tasty vegetarian food can be—and what better to share than pizza!”

With that said, what better way to continue the celebration of exciting, vibrant and tasteful vegetarian delicacies than by introducing you to London’s famous vegetarian restaurant, The Gate. Proud owner Michael Daniel is doing his part to promote vegetarianism too, with his restaurant putting on daily Mini Cooking Classes to reach out to more than just the vegetarian community.

“We put on these classes to introduce vegetarian food,” he said, “and bring awareness as to why it’s advisable for people to want to change their diets after learning the health benefits of leading a vegetarian lifestyle.”

Offering the best in vegetarian food across the capital that will more than satisfy your taste buds, the business is celebrating its 25th year and has expanded from one location to a second in London; one in Hammersmith and the other in Islington.

Having no experience or training of how to run a restaurant when The Gate first opened for business in December 1989, and after 25 years of success, Michael has designed the menu faultlessly to represent and celebrate his culture and childhood memories of growing up, with a lot of that inspiration coming from his grandmother’s Arabic and Indian cooking, along with traditional Jewish foods.

“I am constantly checking the quality of my food and striving for perfection. I believe you’re only as good as your last meal.” Michael believes the key part of The Gate’s success is the blend of flavours and ingredients, along with the aesthetic appeal of easy-on-the-eye dishes that are prepared to perfection.

“When people visit the restaurant, I want them to first and foremost love the food. I’m all about great food and service and I want diners to experience that along with innovative, high quality vegetarian cuisine,” he explained.

The Gate caters for both adults and little ones, having an extensive a la carte menu and children’s menu to choose from. Vegan and gluten free options are also available to customers upon request, as well as nut free options, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. If you are interested in visiting The Gate, they are open Monday to Sunday, with last orders at 10.30pm. More information can be found on their website.
