5 European Destinations in Easy Reach of London

One of the great things about living in London is the ease with which you can get out of it. If you’re planning a getaway across the Channel, you can avail yourself of the excellent transport links to the continent.

London, Next Stop Europe

You might board a plane at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, or Luton. On the other hand, there are several major train stations in the capital, many of which offer a route into mainland Europe. Then, there’s the option of getting into a car and heading down to Dover to catch a ferry.

Residents of London might consider these options. But so too might visitors from outside the country, looking to string together a longer tour of Europe, with London representing just one part of it.

5 Places to Explore

So, which destinations in Europe lie within easy reach of London?

Paris, France

A short trip on the Eurostar will put you in the French capital. Paris offers a treasure trove of culture and history, as well as the local Disneyland resort. But it also offers a gateway to the rest of France. Travel during Winter, and you’re just a short train ride away from all the ski holidays France has to offer.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is a very different sort of capital to Paris. It’s small enough that you can easily walk from one side of the city centre to the other over the course of a single day. It’s built around a network of beautiful canals, beside which you can enjoy a bike ride – and then a coffee. There are also several beautiful museums to look at.

Bruges, Belgium

This small town in Belgium is enormously popular with tourists, and you’ll find it crowded during peak season. Walk to the top of the Belfort and enjoy the tranquillity inside the Basilica of the Holy Blood. It’s best to travel when the weather is favourable; that way, you’ll be able to see the city in sunlight, from the waterways.

Marseille, France

Returning to France, we should consider Marseille, which sits on the south coast adjoining the Mediterranean. The tourist experience here is very different to that of Paris, with a wealth of trendy bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a part of the continent that’s often overlooked in favour of Germany, France and Spain. While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Pfaffenthal Elevator, which is an all-glass structure connecting the city centre to the nearby valley of the same name. You can get a great view of your surroundings, and, best of all, it’s free!
