Sapphire, aquamarine & diamond rings. Offered in Jewellery auction, May 9

Diamonds are forever; so too are sapphires and rubies

If there is one piece of jewellery that is desired above all others, it is the engagement ring. Historically the tradition of exchanging bands of precious metal to commemorate a special pledge to someone, either as rings or bracelets, goes back thousands of years. The ring we choose to adorn our finger can speak volumes about individual taste, economic standing and personality.

Since the 1940s a diamond ring has been the traditional go-to engagement ring. In 1947, De Beers launched the most famous advertising campaign in history—“A diamond is forever”—and the rest was history.

A classic single-stone diamond ring remains the most sought-after engagement ring worn worldwide, but times are changing. Today, with so much choice available to them, many women are choosing to think outside the “ring” box and be bolder in terms of colour, stone and style preference.

Diamonds have traditionally been used in engagement rings due to the strength of the stones.

“Diamonds are the hardest gemstone on earth and if you are wearing it every day it’s good to have something that can stand up to day-to-day wear,” says Sarah Duncan, Head of Jewellery at Chiswick Auctions. “That being said, I am seeing more and more couples coming in looking for sapphire and ruby rings, both of which are also very hard stones. They are becoming increasingly popular choices for engagement rings and make beautiful alternatives to the traditional diamond ring.”

Antique rings can also be a unique and special way to display your taste. “There’s very little chance of seeing someone else with the same ring if you choose an antique or vintage piece,” Duncan says. Historical pieces offer a sentimental connection in the knowledge that the piece of jewellery has been worn and cherished over many years.

Whatever type of ring you choose to adorn that special ring finger, an auction house is a wonderful place to get impartial advice on buying. Chiswick Auctions has a Jewellery auction on the 9th of May that will feature a large selection of over ninety rings. Something special for everyone!
