Pets Yoga at The Runnymede Hotel

The Blurb

Kittens, puppies, and even bunnies, Pets Yoga is a new style of exercise class, combining the relaxing art of yoga with the stress-relieving benefits that cuddling animals evokes. Taught by a qualified yoga teacher and with animals from only ethical and caring pet owners, this is certainly a unique experience, but one that I would happily repeat again and again.

The Process

The class is split up into playtime and yoga time. The first ten minutes of the class is spent getting to know the pets – in my case, adorable little Shih Tzu puppies. While the pups roam freely around the room, becoming familiar with their surroundings, we had a chance to cuddle and play with them. The class then begins, just like any other yoga class; introductions, breathing techniques, stretches… though all the while, the little Shih Tzus continue to explore, nibbling toes and pulling hair. Personally, this was a welcomed distraction, only adding to my enjoyment – I was still able to hold my pose, I just had to be a little more careful about where I placed my foot. Twenty minutes later, we rested for another ten minutes of puppy play time, before continuing the class for the final twenty minutes of yoga. By this point, the puppies had all exhausted themselves, taking comfort on the ends of our mats, sweetly snoring, while we did our own version of a downward dog. By the end of the class, I wanted nothing more than to curl up with the puppies and take a nap.

The Results

If you are looking for a serious and advanced yoga class, then Pets Yoga probably isn’t for you. If, however, you’re after a good stretch and some stress-relieving petting and cuddles, then I couldn’t recommend Pets Yoga enough. I left the class feeling totally relaxed and very ‘zen’.

The Details

Pets Yoga is based in London, with classes taking place at different locations in the city. But for those looking to escape the skyscrapers for the day, The Runnymede Hotel in Surrey, also offers Pets Yoga classes; situated right by the Thames, this is a lovely spot to spend a summer afternoon.
