Hair Organics Putney

The blurb

As we become ever more conscious of what we put in and on our bodies, the clean beauty trend continues to gain momentum. Hair Organics, first established in Notting Hill eight years ago, recently opened a second branch in Putney offering natural hair colouring and treatments to the eco-chic crowd.

The process

In recent years I’ve gradually made the switch to organic haircare and people often comment on how healthy my hair looks. I’m always up for trying new treatments, but as I don’t colour my hair I brought my friend Beverley D’Silva along to test out the naturally derived colours at Hair Organics.

All the products used in the salon are free from SLS and parabens, and owner Terry Wilson has also spent the past couple of decades sourcing the best water-based colour ranges that are as close to fully organic as possible, meaning they are kind to your hair and scalp as well as to the environment. The bleach used for highlights, for example, is made with seaweed powder rather than laden with hydrogen peroxide, while the semi-permanent range is a hundred per cent PPD free, making it suitable for people who have suffered allergic reactions to regular colour.

Hair stylist Kasia Kowalczyk tended to Beverley’s roots using Daniel Field Organic and Mineral permanent colour, which replaces ammonia with a gentler compound called monoethanolamine that does not cause the hair damage or scalp irritation associated with regular salon hair colourants. To break up the dark brown colour, Kasia added subtle reddish highlights and, once these were done, applied a conditioning treatment with cold-pressed camellia oil that was left on for 10-15 minutes.

Meanwhile salon manager Roberto Puddu made sure my hair was thoroughly moisturised with a heat-activated avocado oil treatment left on for about half an hour. Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, B, D and E as well as protein, and promotes healthy growth and shine. He then gave the ends a light trim and applied a few drops of smoothing serum to the lengths before blowdrying the hair straight.

The results

The avocado oil treatment left my hair beautifully smooth and shiny, and Beverley’s rich chestnut-coloured curls looked decidedly glam. With a flick of our glossy manes and one last glance in the mirror we strutted out of the salon and down Lower Richmond Road, causing traffic collisions all the way.
