Ask the expert: Q & A with Emma Coleman, Dermatology & Aesthetic RGN

Q: Can lip fillers ever look natural?

A: Absolutely! A large proportion of my clients ask for a natural lip, to the point where they want to keep it as their secret and don’t want partners, mums or friends to notice. It’s more a way for them to feel better. A combination of treating in proportion to the client’s lower face, as well as using the correct technique, type and amount of dermal filler ensures the ‘un-done’ look is achieved.

Q: What can electrolytes in skincare do for you?

A: Electrolytes are ingredients that, once mixed with fluids, create an electrical chargeand help hydrating and other active ingredients to get to where they are needed, and in exactly the right amount. Keeping skin’s moisture and nourishment levels balanced is a delicate process; electrolytes function as the finely tuned distribution system that ensures the balance is struck just right, leaving skin glowing. On skincare and face mask ingredients lists, look out for extracts such as sodium PCA, potassium lactate and copper gluconate.

Q: What is the best treatment for enlarged pores?

A: These tend to be visible in combination or oily skin types, and can become more noticeable with age as the skin loses elasticity. If these are really bothersome, it’s a good idea to seek out and invest in a course of salicylic & glycolic combination peels, or alternatively some Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), rejuvenation therapy. Using cleansers or face washes containing Alpha- and Beta-Hydroxy acids on a regular basis will also help to reduce pore size by keeping them clear. Opting for water-based moisturisers containing Niacinamide -a vitamin B3 derivative known to shrink pores – as part of your routine will also improve the situation.

Skin Food of the Month:

Beetroot – in season at the moment, high in Vitamin C, antioxidants and fibre too. If I am short on time I like to whip up this Beetroot Dip, and my three sons love it too.

• Take 4 fresh beetroots and rinse well
• Place in a slow cooker with 200ml of cold water and cook for 4 hours
• OR place the raw beets on a baking tray and roast at 190 degrees for 40 minutes
• Allow the cooked beets to cool. Place in a blender or Bullit with 1 tablespoon of crème fraîche and 1 teaspoon of horseradish (optional). Serve with oat cakes or chopped veg. (Image)
