Boom Burger Portobello Road to Open January

Boom Burger, the uniquely Jamaican-influenced burger company has secured its first permanent restaurant site. The new home at 272 Portobello Road is ideally situated on this iconic street to cater for west Londoners, tourists and London’s growing burger fan base. The soft opening is scheduled for late January 2014 with the restaurant and bar fully up and running in early February. The restaurant has 25 covers inside, another 20 outside and will also offer takeaways – perfect for the Portobello Market crowds.

Caribbean flavours are key to the Boom Burger experience, and so plantain fries are served alongside the standard potato variety, house mayo is pepped up with Scotch Bonnets, and the traditional chicken burger is replaced by a Jerk Burger, complete with papaya and mango sauce and fried plantain. The bar will serve a selection of rum cocktails and drinks designed to match the Jamaican flavours. The interiors and style will capture the feel of the Jamaican restaurants Josh grew up in, with materials like bamboo incorporated, and a Jamaican soundtrack played throughout. Open for lunch and dinner six days a week, Boom Burger will also be open all day on Fridays and Saturdays to cater to the market crowds with a selection of brunch options including the popular Brunch Boom, comprising a fried egg, sweet-cure bacon, bacon jam and avocado salsa.

Quality of ingredients is also closely monitored. All Boom Burger meat is organic, and sourced from local Baron’s Court based butcher, H.G. Walter, while brioche buns are bought in from artisan bakery The Bread Factory. Plantain and Scotch Bonnets are all bought from a local West Indian trader near de Lisser’s West London home.

Young chef Josh de Lisser is bringing a new Caribbean twist to London’s burger scene with this new site. Having grown up in Jamaica, de Lisser’s concept is inspired by the “loud flavours” found in traditional Caribbean cooking and his childhood inability to find a decent burger. “There was nowhere to get a good burger in Montego Bay,” says de Lisser, “so I started experimenting with all the unique and fantastic flavours on my doorstep.”

Boom Burger has run successful pop-ups at The Earl Of Portobello in Westbourne Grove and The Doll’s House on Hoxton Square.
