How to Boost Your Self-Esteem as You Age

There are things that can bump and knock your confidence throughout your life, but as you get to a certain age, maintaining a solid level of self-esteem can become harder.

Fortunately, we’ve got a host of tips that can help you boost your self-esteem back up and leave you feeling great in no time at all!

Exercise

No matter your age, there’s always some form of physical activity you can do. In fact, it’s very important to stay active because of all the benefits. The NHS explains that you should be doing anything from a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, to a mix of moderate and vigorous aerobic activity every week.

So, if you haven’t been feeling yourself then avoiding exercise is not the way to go. In fact, you should do the opposite. Remember how much more invigorated you were when you were exercising and keeping physically busy; after all, exercise releases endorphins and they’re not known as the happy hormone for no reason!

Quit the comparisons

If there is one thing that we are all guilty of it is comparing ourselves to others and other people’s lives. This needs to stop, so simply don’t do that. Whether there are people ‘doing better’ than you, but there will always be people who are worse off, so, if it doesn’t directly impact you, then let do not concern yourself with it.

However, it really is essential to remind yourself just how lucky you are, because there really is something to feel special about; no matter how big or small, see the positives.

Be around upbeat people

Make sure that you surround yourself with positive people who won’t bring down your state of mind. You’ll find that your self-esteem is soon boosted when you cut out negativity in your life.

Who makes you feel good? Who can you rely on when you’re feeling less than 100%? As you get older, friend circles tend to get smaller and with good reason; because you should naturally want to weed out the people who bring negative energy into your life.

Get good levels of rest

Sleeping well is important regardless of age, because as various reliable sources confirm, lack of sleep not only affects mood, it can work the other way with mood and mental states having an impact on sleep too.

Having some degree of anxiety has been shown to increase both agitation and arousal, and this equates to difficulty sleeping. if you don’t sleep well, and you feel low with anxiety and stress you will feel tired. All these feeling have the ability to result in a total lack of self-esteem because everything’s running on empty.

So, it goes without saying that you should maintain a strong and healthy sleep routine to prevent these things from happening.

Learn something new

It’s never too late to learn a new skill or add another string to your bow. It’s always an exciting experience when you can step out of your comfort zone on the way to picking up a new talent.

Getting out of your comfort zone and trying something that makes you a little uncomfortable is always good for your self-confidence.

Why not put your time into studying something you had intentions to learn but perhaps never got around to achieving? The feeling of success will fill you full of pride and adoration for yourself once you can tick it off the list!

Why stop there? Once you’ve completed one goal, go ahead and set your next one. This has a two-pronged benefit because you’ll not only be learning, you’ll be staying busy too, as being occupied prevents feelings of sadness, WebMD suggests.

Dress the part

For all our sins, it’s okay to think slightly more superficially, irrespective of age. By dressing well, you are opening the door to lid-bursting levels of confidence!

This isn’t a case of acquiring your life saving and draining every penny on designer labels and looking ‘trendy’, it’s merely about dressing to make yourself feel good. You’ll know your own style preferences, and you may fancy changing them, but now is the time in your life to put some emphasis on you again.

As we mentioned, you shouldn’t be swayed in the opposite direction of a new kind of style or spending large sums of cash. Having said that, there’s no shame in knowing what to wear to make yourself feel a million bucks. So, if you put some money aside to treat yourself every once in a while on something such as a new dress or some shoes, it can do wonders for self-esteem!
