Head Spa
Take it from a haircare junkie – if your locks are a bit lacklustre, your go-to place should be Head Spa in Barnes. The light and airy salon is run by organic haircare genius Tadas Petraitis who might prescribe his Infrared Remedy – an ultrasound treatment applied with what looks like hair straighteners and which seals a rebuilding serum into the hair shafts. Alternatively, he might place you under the steam heater for a few minutes and transform your dry, frazzled frizz into luscious waves, and any colour treatment is finished off with a mineral-packed Dead Sea salt treatment that helps it stay fresh for longer. Whether you’re looking for a little TLC or a total change, you’re in expert hands.

Natural Colour Works
In the heart of Soho, organic colour gurus Bradley Evans and Scott Carey run a busy salon catering to those in the know. Their customers have varied reasons for having switched to non-toxic hair dye – for some, it’s for environmental reasons but the clientele also includes pregnant women, people recovering from chemotherapy, and those with damaged hair looking to nurse it back to health.
The space is welcoming and the air is fresh as it’s completely free from the toxic fumes that permeate regular hair salons. The gentle colour formulas are made in Ireland with ingredients such as soya and seaweed – the latter resulted in some gorgeous golden blonde highlights to my auburn hair, creating a sun-kissed effect.

Organic Masters
Inspired by John Masters, the pioneering hairstylist who developed the ammonia-free ‘clean-air salon’ concept in New York decades ago, this Wimbledon Village salon has impeccable green credentials. As you’d expect, the haircare products used are from the John Masters Organics plant-based range with ingredients well known for their beauty benefits, such as avocado, tea tree and calendula. Colour-wise, my blonde highlights were expertly created with a clay and silk protein-based lightener followed by an ammonia-free toner and a smoothing honey and hibiscus mask.
