The Perfect Mix of Midi and Maxi

The new skirt on the block is a fun mix of the midi and maxi. Below the knee, hitting the calf and maybe skimming as low as the ankle, but never touching the ground.

With so many options, this length can be elegant and ladylike with a full prom style skirt, or sleek and a little edgy in a curve-hugging tube shape. Whether you like bright stripes, floral prints, a splash of metallic, a cheeky slit or a zip detail, this is a trend anyone can rock.

On The Catwalk

Designers all over the world have been experimenting with this length. These stunning dresses featuring full skirts and bold colours were demonstrated perfectly by Neha Agarwal and Delpozo during their Spring/Summer 2015 fashion week shows.

Neha Agarwal SS15

Indian designer Neha Agarwal’s collection, ‘From Russia With Love’ featured this full skirt dress, with a rainbow of colourful stripes and Russian doll print on the hem. The bright colours are blended with light pastel tones, ideal for a summer-to-autumn look.

Delpozo

Delpozo SS15

Delpozo goes for a simple colour palette of green, black and white in large graphic blocks. Worn with a neat shirt, the skirt length gives a conservative, fabulously slick look.

On The Street

Street-style snaps of the ankle-skimming skirt shine brightest for me when worn elegantly with a tucked in blouse or masculine shirt, or given a young free edge with a cropped tee and structured hat. Add over-sized sunnies, a bright clutch and skinny heel to complete the look.

High Street Style

Depending on your budget and style choice, if you do the research, you can find the perfect skirt to meet your needs.

Alice & Olivia and online store ASOS have great choices for a metallic shine, high waist full skirt. Full of pleats and pale sheens these are a fab option for evening elegance. Best worn dressed up—however, throw on a pair of converses or ankle boots for a chilled out day look.

If you prefer to wear a block of black then DKNY is the place to look. Instead of a full skirt, this length is incredibly sexy when figure hugging. A body-con shape or A-line skirt can look great. DKNY use luxury fabrics like merino wool and careful attention to detail with added zips and pleats to flatter your form. When choosing a body-con long skirt it’s important to think about how easily you’ll be able to move. A stretchy fabric is great for daywear when you’ll be on the move and need a little bit more freedom.

If you prefer the body-con style but want a touch of colour or pattern, try Zara’s tube skirt. With its multicoloured stripes in autumnal shades this will be a great choice for the colder months. Pair with a plain neutral top to give the skirt all of the attention, or add the matching crop sweater for a serious statement.
