Board Game of the Week: Exploding Kittens

Every week during #Lockdown2020, West London Living suggests one of their favourite board games to help keep the whole family entertained with not a screen in sight.

This week’s game:

Exploding Kittens

The blurb:

Exploding Kittens is a highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette. Players take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game. The game was created by Elan Lee (Xbox, ARGs), Matthew Inman (The Oatmeal), and Shane Small (Xbox, Marvel)

What to expect:

This is essentially a card game, except instead of Clubs, Hearts, Diamonds and Spades you have “Catermelons” “Bearded Cats” and “Exploding Kittens”. Players take turns to draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten and loses the game. There are plenty of wild cards to keep things interesting and the illustrations on the cards are amusing and make for an engaging play. It’s kind of like a cross between UNO and Shithead – but with cats. Exploding Kittens is light-hearted, silly-in-a-good-way and suitable for all ages (the official guidelines say ages 7+ but we’re sure younger members of the family will enjoy it too if buddied up with an older player). Highly recommended for a quick-to-learn game that will help while away these everlasting afternoons indoors.

The specifics:

  • 2-5 players
  • Suitable for age 7+
  • Learning time: a few minutes
  • Game time: 10-20mins per round
