Board Game of the Week: Articulate

Every week during #Lockdown2020, West London Living suggests one of their favourite board games to help keep the whole family entertained with not a screen in sight.

This week’s game:

Articulate

The blurb:

It’s the fast-talking description game! The king of ‘what’s-on-the-card?’ games; the queen of against-the-clock gabbling and gesticulating; the prince of all-ages fun family get-togethers and the entire royal family of competitive after-dinner challenge-your-friends revelry…

‘Describe a word without actually saying it’ – it might sound very simple, but when you’re racing the timer and being heckled mercilessly by the other team then… well, let’s just say that it isn’t! Articulate draws the shy from their shell, de-cocks the cocky and unites whole roomfuls of people in bouts of good old-fashioned hysterical laughter.

What to expect:

The aim of the game is to be the first team to move all the way around the board by getting your teammate to guess the word/object/person/thing you’re describing. Ther are ‘wildcard’ type squares on the board where you have the chance to take an extra few steps forward or move your opponents back.

The fun lies, however, not in winning the game; but in flexing your articulation muscles as you try to describe whatever is on the card you’ve drawn without saying the word itself. You get a good glimpse into people’s imaginations and a rush of satisfaction when your teammate guesses your description accurately.

Articulate is the ultimate lockdown game: it provides a good excuse to put down the screens and gather together at the kitchen table for some high octane fun. Kids love the fast and exciting pace and the whole family or household can get a kick out of watching each other look silly as they fumble to make their teammates understand them.

The specifics:

  • 4-8 players
  • Suitable for age 12+
  • Learning time: a few minutes
  • Game time: 60mins per round
