Shoe designer Lucy Choi on jelly shoe disasters, secret girly holidays and influences from her uncle, Jimmy Choo

You grew up in Hong Kong and the Isle of Wight – where do you live now and why?

I live in Notting Hill. I love the eclectic mix of shops, bars and restaurants. The vibrant mix of the arty and the bohemian combined with tradition really appeals to me.

How has your uncle Jimmy Choo influenced your experience as a designer?

My uncle taught me to work hard, be totally dedicated, tenacious and to live your dream.

What or who inspires your work?

Women of all ages – what they wear, how they dress – I love people watching.

What do you like to do for entertainment in west london?

On a Friday I like to go to Portobello for the vintage market. On Friday night we tend to go to The Cow for a quiet drink and then out to eat, as I’m a real foodie. We either go to The Oak or to Uli for the best pan-Asian food in London.

How would you describe your personal style?

I wear a lot of black and this has become my signature, hence the black branding packaging for Lucy Choi London. I like to mix textures, textiles and shapes to add some character to my look.

How do you relax?

I love to cook for family and friends, though I never follow the recipes! I also love playing tennis.

Can you name and shame a style of shoe that you consider to be a fashion disaster?

Jelly shoes – your feet can’t breath and they make your feet smell!

Where do you love to shop for yourself?

I love all the boutiques in Notting Hill and on Ledbury Road – particularly Matches and Wolf & Badger as you always find amazing one-off pieces.

What’s in your fridge right now?

My face creams and nail varnish.

What pair of shoes could you not live without?

A pair of timeless, black shoes I was given when I was 18. The shape, cut and style of these classic shoes inspired me to create my own collection – but with a twist. You’ll see them appear each season in the range, but updated by using luxurious materials and different heel heights.

Where did you go for your most recent holiday and what did you get up to?

I’ve just got back from Tulum, a very remote area in Mexico. I always take a girly holiday once a year with my closest girlfriends. We can’t tell you what we got up to in case my husband is reading this!

What is your most memorable moment so far?

Seeing the very first shoe samples arrive for the new collection – my vision translated into reality.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

This is the busiest time of the year for me, ensuring the new S/S12 stock arrives on time for our stockists and I’m also busy planning the S/S13 collection, so I’m off to Hong Kong this week.

What is your life motto?

If you set your heart on a goal, always do it to the best of your ability. Be passionate about everything you do, or don’t do it!

Where do you live and why?

Having grown up between Islington and Scotland, I’ve lived in Parson’s Green most of my adult life. I love village atmosphere, the mix of ‘country’ pubs, young families, and its proximity to the King’s Road.
