TV presenter and fashion journalist Louise Roe tells us about meeting Valentino and which west London hot spots she misses most when she's away

Where in London do you live and why?

I live in Los Angeles but come back to London for filming a lot. I stay with my best friend in Maida Vale. I love that it’s so close to Notting Hill, where I used to live.

What are you up to at the moment?

I am presenting a lot of fashion programmes for E! Entertainment over
in the US, and am also writing a column for MSN about what’s going on in the fashion world, called Front Roe.

What inspired you to become a fashion journalist?

My dad inspired the writing side – he’s a travel writer and a
publisher, and the fashion side just came with a natural addiction to
shopping I think!

How would you describe your style?

Bright and quite ‘70s influenced.

Do you believe fashion is a luxury or a necessity?

Somewhere in the middle. There’s no need to spend a fortune or buy new clothes every week, but at the same time for a very small amount on the high street nowadays you can absolutely change your mood, outlook, confidence level and day by paying a bit of attention to what you wear.

Tell us your most infallible style tip…

Invest in killer heels. The plainest outfit can be transformed with a
bright, high shoe and the foot is an easy place to try out new trends
if you don’t want to go the whole hog and wear it head to toe.

What has been your most memorable fashion moment – professionally
and personally?

Interviewing Valentino the week before he retired and then going to his last show. That was pretty incredible.

Who are your fashion icons?

Farrah Fawcett, Mia Farrow, Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, Lauren Hutton.

What do you miss when you’re away from the UK?

Baked Beans! GMTV, the sense of humour and of course, above everything, my friends and family.

What are your guilty pleasures?

Frozen yogurt – I have to eat one every day, with loads of toppings;
spending a fortune in nice cocktail bars and buying a LOT of new shoes. But then I tell myself it’s part of my job and it’s my duty…

What has been your most memorable west London meal?

Crazy Homies [125 Westbourne Park Road, W2] at Christmas time for a girlie margarita-fest. I love
that place. Notting Hill Brasserie [92 Kensington Park Road, W11] also holds very special memories.

Do you have a favourite local park?

Holland Park is hands down the best park in London. It’s so undiscovered, every time I go I find a new little area. And it’s very local which gives it a nice feel – less tourists make it over there.

What is the most romantic place you have ever visited?

Marrakech. It’s a sensory overload and such a contrasting culture yet
only three hours flight from London. Bozin is an incredible restaurant  there and the Aman is one of the best hotels in my opinion.

Which west London shops do you rely on?

The fruit at Portobello market, The Spice Shop [1 Blenheim Crescent, W11], The Travel Book shop [13 Blenheim Crescent, W11],
Melissa Odabash [48b Ledbury Road, W11] for bikinis, Heidi Klein [174 Westborne Grove, W11] for candles.

What’s in your secret address book?

The Coronet Cinema [103 Notting Hill Gate, W11], The Hillgate Pub [24 Hillgate Street, W8], Italian restaurant Red Pepper [8 Formosa Street, W8] in Maida Vale and
Ottolenghi for their enormous and yummy meringues!

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

I don’t know about life, but my grandpa always said never judge a book by its cover, and never expect anything. Both become truer as I get older!

What inspired you to launch Libby London?

A genuine inability to find what I needed. I hate suits. I love dresses for work but most are either too short, inappropriate or too expensive. A good dress is so easy to … Read more →
